Can You Take a Large Dog on Trains in Portugal?

On this page
TL;DR: You may be able to take an eligible large dog on a CP train in Portugal, but the answer changes with the operator and service. CP has a muzzle, short-lead, document, and ticket rule for dogs outside carriers. Metro Lisboa generally requires animals to be contained, while Metro do Porto publishes a different lead-and-muzzle rule. Check the operator on the day you travel.
This guide is for English-speaking visitors and residents travelling with a large companion dog in Portugal. It is not legal advice. Train travel is an operator rule question first, then a dog-preparation question. A rule for CP is not automatically a rule for Lisbon Metro, Porto Metro, a bus, or a replacement coach.
What did Decree-Law 173/2026 change?
Decree-Law 173/2026 was published on 1 September 2026 and says it enters force 30 days later, on 1 October 2026. It updates the passenger-transport framework, including rail. It does not create a universal right to board every service with a large dog.
The law leaves operator transport conditions in place within the legal framework. That is why your itinerary needs to be checked service by service.
For this article’s date, 26 September 2026, the 1 October effective date is still in the future. Do not describe a future change as a current boarding right. After the law takes effect, the practical question remains: what does the operator carrying this part of the journey currently permit?
Start by choosing the operator, not just the destination
Write down the entire journey before buying a ticket. “Lisbon to Porto” may mean a CP train followed by Metro do Porto, a local bus, or a taxi. A rail-replacement coach has its own conditions. Open the official page for each operator in order, then confirm whether the dog is in a carrier or outside one, whether a ticket is needed, and whether the transfer changes the rule. A route that works on the main train can fail at the last connection.
What does CP require for a large dog outside a carrier?
CP’s current pet transport page requires an uncontained dog to wear a functional muzzle, be controlled on a short lead, and travel with an up-to-date vaccination booklet. The ticket process requires the electronic identification code, or the Companion Animal Identification Document. The dog cannot occupy a seat.
For foreign passengers, CP says to bring the pet passport containing identification and health information. Get the dog comfortable with a muzzle before station day. A busy platform is not the place for the first training session.
The CP general conditions add an important exception: historical and tourist trains do not accept companion animals, except assistance dogs. CP’s pet page separately describes a different rule for small animals in an appropriate hand-luggage-sized carrier. Do not assume that a large crate solves every connection. For scheduled road transfers, CP says small companion animals need an appropriate container, so confirm the route before leaving home.
Arrive with the dog lightly exercised, toileted, and wearing familiar equipment. Keep the vaccination booklet or identification document easy to reach rather than packed in luggage. Bring water, bags, a towel, a normal lead, and the functional muzzle. The person travelling with the dog is responsible for supervision throughout the journey.
How much does a dog ticket cost on CP?
CP states that an uncontained dog pays a full fare in the passenger’s class on Alfa Pendular and Intercidades services. On Regional and InterRegional, CP lists a half fare. Lisbon, Porto, and Coimbra urban trains are listed as free. CP pet transport
Contained small pets follow a separate free-carriage rule. Celta has separate size and weight conditions. Check the exact service before buying, including the return journey.
Buy with enough time to solve a document issue. CP says the required identification information is needed to issue a ticket for an uncontained dog. If the paperwork is incomplete, there is no reliable last-minute workaround. Confirm the return service as well, because the ticket type, train type, or connections can change.
Can your dog use Metro Lisboa, Metro do Porto, Carris, or STCP?
Do not assume that a CP ticket rule applies after you change transport. Metro Lisboa says companion animals must be properly contained so they do not disturb or frighten other customers. For a large dog outside a carrier, ask the operator directly before relying on the route.
Metro do Porto’s published conditions allow one dog per customer with a lead up to one metre and a functional muzzle. The same document prohibits animals classified in law as dangerous or potentially dangerous. Carris and STCP also publish their own conditions, so check a bus or tram connection before leaving the station.
Metro Lisboa and Metro do Porto are not interchangeable. Metro Lisboa’s published instruction requires companion animals to be properly contained. That does not read as approval for an ordinary large dog outside a carrier, so contact the operator before relying on that part of the route. Metro do Porto publishes the specific one-metre lead and functional-muzzle condition, plus one dog per customer and no use of seats. These are operator rules, not a national substitute for Lisbon’s rule.
If Carris or STCP forms part of the route, read that operator’s own current conditions. When a transfer requires a carrier that your large dog cannot reasonably use, choose another route rather than arguing at the vehicle door.
Which dogs are not allowed on CP?
CP prohibits dangerous and potentially dangerous animals. Portugal’s DGAV guidance identifies the statutory category and its related breed list. It includes the Rottweiler and does not list the Cane Corso.
That does not give every Cane Corso an automatic boarding right. CP can still apply its conditions about health, hygiene, noise, behavior, size, and passenger comfort. The CP general conditions are worth reading for your route.
Portugal’s category is legal, not a synonym for a large dog. The DGAV page is the source to consult if you are unsure about a listed breed or relevant cross. Do not use a breed label alone to assume acceptance. CP’s own conditions still apply to all dogs.
How can you prepare a large dog for the journey?
Take a quiet walk before leaving, allow toilet time, and bring water, bags, a towel, and documents. Teach the dog to rest beside you, not in a doorway or aisle. Choose a quieter time when possible. If your dog is distressed by crowds, train noise, or unfamiliar dogs, choose a different arrangement.
Avoid a large meal immediately before boarding. Keep chews, food puzzles, and high-value toys away from other dogs. If your dog has guarded things before, read our resource guarding guide before planning a public journey.
Stay out of doorways, aisles, and boarding flows. If your dog is distressed by crowds, train noise, or unfamiliar dogs, change the travel plan rather than hoping they will settle once the doors close. A busy public service is not a first socialization session. Give the dog an easy exit wherever your route permits.
What about meeting another dog at the destination?
Do not make a crowded station the first greeting. Arrange a calm parallel walk after the journey, with a clear exit and no toys or food. Introducing two dogs safely gives a sensible structure. You can also use Fennaro to state travel, lead, and meetup expectations in advance.
What should you check before buying a ticket?
Check the exact operator, train type, ticket, documents, and every transfer. CP, Metro Lisboa, Metro do Porto, and local buses do not share one universal large-dog rule. Reopen the official pages before the journey and have a backup route if a connection requires containment.
Pre-trip checklist
- Identify every operator and transfer on both outbound and return routes.
- Read each official animal-transport page on the day you book and again before departure.
- Confirm whether the dog travels in a carrier or under the operator’s lead-and-muzzle rule.
- Bring the current vaccination booklet with identification, or the required companion-animal document; foreign travellers should bring the pet passport CP specifies.
- Confirm the dog ticket for the exact CP service.
- Pack water, bags, towel, lead, and a muzzle the dog already accepts.
- Plan an alternative if the last connection requires containment or the dog cannot cope with the environment.
Keep a screenshot or saved copy of the official conditions you checked, together with booking details. This is useful when you need to confirm a service name at a station, but it does not replace checking live updates such as disruption notices. If a staff member says the service has changed, ask about the current service rather than relying on the original itinerary. A calm backup plan protects both the dog and the rest of the journey.
For more guides, visit Fennaro or the dog care guides. A large dog can travel well when the route fits both the rules and the dog’s ability to cope before boarding.
Common questions
Can I take a large dog on an Alfa Pendular train?
CP allows eligible dogs outside a carrier when they wear a functional muzzle, stay on a short lead, and travel with the required current identification and vaccination documents. CP lists a full-fare ticket for dogs on Alfa Pendular and Intercidades services. Check CP’s current page before purchasing because operator conditions can change.
Does a dog need a ticket on CP trains?
CP states that uncontained dogs need a full-fare ticket on Alfa Pendular and Intercidades, a half-fare ticket on Regional and InterRegional services, and travel free on Lisbon, Porto, and Coimbra urban trains. The fare and purchase process should be checked for the exact service and date of travel.
Can I take my large dog on the Lisbon Metro?
Metro Lisboa says companion animals must be properly contained so they do not inconvenience, disturb, or frighten other passengers. That is different from CP’s rule for an eligible dog outside a carrier. Contact Metro Lisboa before travel if your large dog cannot be transported in an appropriate carrier.
Can I take my large dog on the Porto Metro?
Metro do Porto publishes different conditions. It permits one dog per customer when the dog has a lead no longer than one metre and a functional muzzle. It also prohibits animals legally classified as dangerous or potentially dangerous. Check the published rules again before your journey, especially if using connecting operators.
Are Cane Corsos banned from CP trains in Portugal?
CP prohibits dangerous and potentially dangerous animals. Portugal’s listed potentially dangerous breeds include the Rottweiler but do not name the Cane Corso. Breed list status is still not a guarantee of carriage: CP’s general health, hygiene, behavior, and passenger-comfort conditions also apply to every dog.
What paperwork do I need for a dog on a Portuguese train?
For an uncontained dog, CP requires a current vaccination booklet showing the electronic identification code, or the Companion Animal Identification Document. CP says foreign passengers should present the pet passport. Bring the correct ticket and recheck the whole route because a rail replacement bus or local operator can have different conditions.
